A casting technique in which the fly line travels forward before the leader and fly have left the water, causing the leader and fly to be pulled after the rolling line. This technique is useful when fly-casting on small streams or rivers that are overgrown with trees. When executed correctly, the line will not travel more than 10 to 12 inches behind the angler's elbow. Start by working out about 15 feet of line by using a horizontal cast in any free direction. Then pull more line off the reel which you can drop on the water for shooting. Point the rod forward as you would for the overhead cast, draw the rod back slowly to the 1 o'clock position and let the line settle behind you. Then, firmly execute a normal forward cast. The momentum generated will lift the line from the water and roll it out towards the target area.
